Proper mounting height is critical for ensuring reliable connectivity and optimal performance of Silvanet Mesh Gateways (MGs). This article provides recommended mounting heights and placement guidance for common deployment scenarios.
Mesh Gateways extend the Silvanet mesh network by relaying data between sensors and Border Gateways. Even small changes in height or position can significantly impact coverage.
General Height Recommendations
- Forested areas:
Mount Mesh Gateways at 3–4 m above ground - Open or flat corridors (for example, power lines or roads):
Mount at 5–10 m only if additional line of sight is required
Always use the lowest height that provides clear line of sight. Increasing height beyond what is needed does not necessarily improve performance.
Line of Sight and Coverage
A clear line of sight (LoS) to the Border Gateway and nearby Mesh Gateways is more important than absolute height.
Obstructions such as dense vegetation, terrain changes, or man-made structures can significantly reduce range.
Typical Coverage Expectations
| Environment | Typical Range | Recommended Height | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light forest | 300–700 m | ≥ 3 m | Clear LoS required |
| Dense forest | 200–500 m | ≥ 3 m | Vegetation impacts range |
| Open areas | 1–3 km | 5–10 m | Use only where LoS is required |
Placement Best Practices
- Install Mesh Gateways according to the Site Plan
- Prioritize line of sight over height
- Avoid mounting behind dense foliage, terrain features, or metal objects
- Ensure good sun exposure for reliable charging
- Keep Mesh Gateways as close as possible to planned locations
Tip
Before permanently mounting the device, you can temporarily mount or hang the Mesh Gateway using the mounting wire to confirm connectivity. Adjust height or orientation if needed before securing it in place.
When the Planned Height or Location Is Not Possible
If the planned mounting location or height is not accessible, install the Mesh Gateway at a nearby alternative location.
After installation:
- Complete the deployment in the Deployment App
- Review the updated connectivity and coverage in Site Management in the Planning Tool
- Validate that nearby sensors and Mesh Gateways are still within range
Even small changes in height or position can significantly affect coverage and may require adjustments to sensor or gateway placement.
Gen 2 vs Gen 3 Considerations
- Gen 3 Mesh Gateways automatically join the mesh after installation
- Gen 2 Mesh Gateways may require additional verification steps in the Deployment App
Always follow the instructions shown in the Deployment App.
Common Mounting Mistakes to Avoid
- Deploying significantly away from the planned location without validating coverage
- Mounting too high without a line-of-sight requirement
- Installing behind dense foliage or terrain obstructions
- Permanently mounting before verifying connectivity
- Do not deploy the Mesh Gateway horizontally or upside down.
