Proper mounting of Silvanet Gen 4 Pro Wildfire Sensors is critical to ensure accurate environmental monitoring and reliable fire detection. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for both permanent and temporary mounting methods, helping your team deploy sensors safely and effectively. Following these methods will maximize sensor performance while minimizing impact on trees and the surrounding environment.

Before Mounting the Sensor
Fire detection Mode
- At the planned sensor location identify a mounting position in a south-facing orientation before starting the installation process.
- The sensor should have a clear line of sight with an angle of approximately 20–30 degrees to the horizon.
- The sensor must not be deployed indoors or in areas surrounded by large buildings, as this may obstruct signal transmission.
Weather Station Mode
- At the planned sensor location, identify a mounting position with a south-facing orientation. Where possible, select a semi-shaded area to support the most accurate environmental reporting.
- The sensor should have a clear line of sight with an angle of approximately 20–30 degrees to the horizon.
- The sensor must not be deployed indoors or in areas surrounded by large buildings, as this may obstruct signal transmission.
- If a sensor in Weather Station Mode must be installed in an area with strong and continuous sun exposure, a north-facing orientation is recommended to help minimize potential impact on environmental measurements.
Note: See our article Best Practices for Deploying Gen 4 Pro Sensors in Weather Station Mode for Further details of deploying in Weathr Station Mode.
Permanent Method: Mounting with Treenails
Installation using the provided wooden nail and an 8 cm spacer.
At the planned sensor location, select a healthy tree with suitable installation space approximately 3 m above the ground and with a south-facing orientation.
Clear any excessive bark from the installation area to create a flat mounting surface, taking care not to damage the tree.
-
Drill a 6–7 cm deep hole using a 10 mm drill bit.
For hardwoods, begin with a smaller drill bit before switching to the 10 mm bit.
Using the Silvanet Deployment App, scan and register the sensor within your site.
Insert the treenail through the sensor loop and the 8 cm spacer.
Carefully hammer the treenail into the drilled hole.
Ensure the sensor hangs freely, vertically, and without tension.
Why the Spacer Matters:
Ensures optimal satellite connectivity
Helps keep the sensor protected from tree sap
Reduces direct contact with the tree surface for improved long-term stability
Temporary Method: Garden Wire
At the planned sensor location, select a healthy tree branch with suitable installation space approximately 3 m above the ground and a south-facing orientation.
Cut the garden wire to approximately twice the circumference of the tree branch.
Feed the wire through the loop at the top of the sensor.
Using the Silvanet Deployment App, scan and register the sensor within your site.
Loop the garden wire snugly around the branch, forming an “X” shape for maximum stability, then twist the wire securely to fasten it in place.
Ensure the sensor hangs securely and remains stable after installation.
Why the sensor stability Matters:
If the sensor is too loose, it may lead to inaccurate detection and environmental readings.
Note: Garden wire can damage tree growth and should only be used for temporary installations or testing purposes.
